Challenging Finish Wednesday
Thor Hushovd is the team's best placed rider overall (14th) as 118 riders remain tied on time for the race lead heading into the first of two mountain-top finishes in the week-long race. Sacha Modolo (Bardiani Valvole-CSF Inox) took the stage win ahead of Stage 1 winner Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and moved into the overall lead. BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said Hushovd's hopes to improve on his eighth-place finish on the opening stage were dashed when he and lead-out man Daniel Oss got caught up in the last roundabout. "We did keep Tejay van Garderen in good position for the general classification," Lelangue said of the team's primary objective for the stage. Four riders who had been away for most of the 171.4 km race still led by nearly two minutes heading into the final 30 kms. But the chasing efforts of the peloton swallowed them up inside the final 10 km.
